Midnight Dream- I walked slowly behind my mother on wobbly legs. She told me I was to meet her father today. Mother changed her gait to a slow trot. I carefully began cantering to keep up. Soon we entered a different land. My mother then led me up onto a large hill. I looked down over the land and gasped. Horses of all different colors were assembled below me. In my excitement I neighed and reared into the air lashing out my tiny hooves. All the mares below me looked up and neighed in return before returning to their grazing. Then, a black stallion galloped up and stood beside my mother. I stared at him in awe. He was so big! I hid behind my mother hoping he wouldn’t see me. Of course though, he did! Against my mother’s white pelt I was easy to find. He walked toward me and my mother moved away so he could see me. He snorted softly so as not to scare me, “Hello, I am your father, Poseidon.” I started into his eyes still a little frightened. He laughed a bit and I hid behind my mother once again. He then went over to the edge of the hill and neighed very loudly, “My daughter has been born today. One day she will lead you all. Her name is Midnight Dream.” I thought for a moment before realizing that was me. Midnight Dream. Then my mother moved again and nudged me to the side of my father. I looked down again, this time, all the horse were rearing and neighing in joy. I smiled and neighed back. I did not rear though, I was getting too tired. My father nodded for silence and then my mother led me away. She walked inside a cave and I followed. I lay beneath her legs and soon I fell asleep.
I awoke to the sound of many horses. I looked around and noticed my mother wasn’t there. I became frightened and ran outside. The sight was horrifying. Horses I had never seen before were fighting with my father’s herd. There was blood everywhere and all I really saw was the fury in their eyes. A blood red stallion galloped over to me and bit my neck. Pain shot through me as I screamed for my mother. Soon I saw her. Her usual white pelt was stained with blood and dirt. Her eyes were full of pain and I saw a large gash in her leg. I stood frozen in place until she came near me and nudged me over into the woods. The next thing I remember is my mother leaving me in a cave. She told me she would come back as soon as it was safe. I waited and waited for her to return. I was hungry and thirsty. I decided to leave the cave in search of water. I knew older horses ate grass, so I tried it. I did not like it at first, but I knew I had to eat something. Soon I came to a stream and drank the cool water. Something told me my mother would not be returning, so I decided to search for a home. I soon came across a canyon with the scent of other horses. I walked down the hill into the steep terrain. I soon saw other horses and became excided and went off in search of a mother.
Spirit- I walked under a large willow tree. Red Hawk laughed above me. I was just a yearling and she was young too. We had grown up together and she was the only one who I would allow to ride me. I reared slightly and started galloping. Hawk grabbed my mane and urged me onward. I neighed and looked into the sky. A eagle flew above me and it made me feel at home. I whistled and my lead mare, my love, came galloping up behind me. She was a golden chestnut and her name was Desert Dancer. I had known her for all my life, we grew up together. She neighed in delight, for she loved running beside me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a swift movement and stopped in my tracks. Hawk lay on my neck and whispered in my ear, “Spirit, what is it?” She followed my gaze and gasped as a black stallion emerged from the darkness. Dancer was on my other side. She asked frightfully, “Who is that?” I shook my mane, “I don’t know…” The stallion then charged forward and I reared in fury. I knew what he wanted, he wanted Dancer! He would never get her. I bared my teeth in anger as Hawk jumped off and ran to Dancer. The stallion hit me hard; he had been at a full gallop when he hit my shoulder. It flung me off balance and I fell onto the ground. The stallion turned upon me and reared above my head. Then, it was nothing.
I remember waking up in a small cave with water running down the sides as it rained outside. I looked around and saw Hawk in the corner crying. A gash was upon her arm. I tried to stand up to comfort her, but when I moved pain shoot through my head. She turned toward me and rushed over to my side. I felt her arms wrap around my neck and her tears soak my fur. Then my life ended as she said it. “He-he… He took her…” She stared into my eyes and then began crying again. Tears came to my eyes, Dancer had been my friend for as long as I could remember, and that wasn’t all… She had been carrying are foal…
